How Do Preserved Flowers Last So Long? Meet the Magic of Double Immersion

At Steelgrass, we are often asked what makes our preserved floral designs last so beautifully. The answer lies in the science behind the blooms.

One of the key preservation techniques used by our trusted suppliers is a method known as double immersion. This process transforms freshly cut flowers into long-lasting botanical pieces that retain their natural look and feel, without the maintenance demands of fresh arrangements.

What is Double Immersion?

Double immersion is a two-step preservation method designed to replace the natural moisture in a flower with stabilising compounds. In the first stage, fresh flowers are immersed in a solution that removes the sap and gently dehydrates the petals. This also eliminates pollen and scent, making preserved flowers an excellent hypoallergenic option for indoor spaces.

After drying, the flowers go through a second immersion, this time in a solution containing plant-based ingredients like glycerine. This locks in shape, suppleness, and colour, giving each bloom its signature lifelike quality.

The result? Real flowers that maintain their appearance for months or even years, with no need for water, sunlight or maintenance, ideal for preserved botanical displays in commercial spaces.

Why We Choose This Method

At Steelgrass, we do not carry out the preservation process ourselves, but we are highly selective about the partners we work with. Our flowers are sourced from suppliers who share our values of sustainability, quality and design integrity.

This ensures that the botanicals we use in hotels, offices and commercial interiors look stunning on day one and stay that way.

Long-Lasting Flowers for Sustainable Design

Preserved flowers are not just a visual feature. They are a smart, sustainable choice for interior styling. Whether it is a front-of-house floral display or a centrepiece for a meeting room, these arrangements reduce waste and ongoing upkeep, while maintaining a premium aesthetic.
